Airflow under ground level deck

I built a ground level deck back in August of 2010. It is about 12' x 14' and is holding up very well. I used pressure treated 2x8 for the joists, spaced 16 on center, with the structure resting on concrete blocks, a few inches above grade. The decking is 5/4 cedar. Before building it I removed all the grass and some soil and laid weed block. Wendell Buysman April 8, 2015 at 2:52 pm. Good article on air spaces. I have a deck that is 10′ off the ground. If I installed a water collection system so the space under the deck could be used as an all season/weather patio, would that reduce air flow to a point where there could be an issue This is why proper deck ventilation becomes essential. There should be a good flow of air across all the four sides so that the wood can move evenly. If there is a restriction of airflow even on just one side, the board or boards will contract or expand unevenly. This will then lead to twisting, warping, and buckling Trex at Ground Level by: Deck Guy I would be cautious when installing Trex at ground level. The lower a deck is to the ground, the less air flow there is to dry it out when it gets wet. This could lead to a potential for mould or mildew with the Trex board

A ground-level deck can be built from 2×4 if the span is less than 5'8″ (1.72m), using ground contact treated lumber. Under a 2×4 deck, the ground will need to be covered to prevent weed growth through the decking on such a low deck. The decking needs to be designed for ground contact or sufficiently raised off the ground to prevent rot Since a ground level deck does not require safety railings or stairs to access, the cost to build one is comparatively lower than building an elevated deck in terms of both materials and labor. Ground level decks set outdoor living spaces apart and give you a beautiful area to add chairs, potted plants, and even a grill for entertaining A huge bonus of building a freestanding grade-level deck is that a building permit isn't required as long as the deck's area is 200 square feet or less (see 2015 IRC, R105.2, Work exempt from permit, #10: Decks not exceeding 200 square feet in area, that are not more than 30 inches above grade at any point, are not attached to a dwelling.
